Okay, so we previously said that you shouldn’t skip savasana, but we know that sometimes, you just gotta get up and go. Maybe class ran a little too long and you have somewhere you really need to be. We don’t mean to sound judgy, but it’s all good if you have a valid reason for skipping savasana and not because you simply don’t want to take the last few minutes to realign your body and energy or you’re unable to stay still and breathe for a while. Some people also find that lying still can be triggering or uncomfortable and therefore choose to cut savasana short or skip it altogether.
If you’re skipping savasana and end up sitting in the reception area or the locker room for as long as savasana would have taken, you would be better off doing that final pose. If you absolutely must leave before or during savasana, here’s how you can do it without disrupting the class:
- Before class starts, tell the instructor that you may have to skip savasana. Typically, they won’t force you to stay, especially if they understand that you’re leaving for an important reason.
- Pick a spot closest to the door. That way you won’t disrupt your classmates as you roll up your mat and pack up to leave.
- Make as little noise as possible while you get your things together and leave the room. For other people, this might be the only quiet few minutes they will have all day.
Again, it’s fine if you need to leave during savasana, but don’t make a habit of it; savasana is not an optional asana. It’s a very real part of every yoga class and an essential way to end it.
